Would you wait in line for 5 days for the iPhone 5? What if instead of standing in line, you were sitting in a plush, stylish, modern home away from home surrounded by a working/dining area, sofas for lounging, and a comfy bed nearby for a quick nap? If so, you would officially be glamping and probably not minding the 5-day wait at all.
The creative geniuses at Black Book Ink, a full-service creative and social media firm, are Apple addicts. They’ve combined their insatiable desire for the iPhone 5 with an ingenious plan…to glamp out at the Apple store in Dallas to be the first in line to get Apple’s latest offering.
As I looked around their open-air office, I wondered about three things: security, power (I didn’t see a generator) and, um, bathroom breaks. (No, there isn’t a port-potty.) With regard to power, the Apple store lets them charge their laptops, iPhones and iPads whenever they want. They have on-site security at night and local businesses have been generous with their bathrooms.
Some people who wait in line for the latest iPhone have to sacrifice productivity and comfort, but not the Black Book Ink creative team. They’re holding staff and client meetings at the glampsite and running business as usual.
The bottom line, though, is they’re glamping out for a reason. “This is an awesome experience, says Chief Strategy Officer Sabrina Dee, “but we really want the phone.”
Note: A few minutes ago, before I pushed the “publish” button, I found out that the Dallas Police made the media team shut down the glampsite, even though the company had called the city prior to setting up and had not violated city regulations. The good news is they’re able to keep their first-in-line position for the iPhone 5 release on Friday. They’ve moved their glampsite to Hotel ZaZa and it’s back to business as usual. This set-up is the perfect example of what I often say…you can work anywhere and still be productive.

Hi Lisa,
this is really cool. Although I love the Apple products too, I wouldn’t do this because I prefer working in the comfort of my home. No bathroom and police issues either
Thanks for sharing – bottom line is that you can you work productively from anywhere, as you note.
Best,
Oliver

It’s definitely a cool set-up and now that they’ve moved to Hotel ZaZa, they don’t have to deal with the police or bathroom issues. It’s not a bad idea to shake things up a bit and work somewhere else, but there’s definitely no place like home (office).
