2012 Working Naked Home Office Gift Guide

Are you still looking for the perfect gift for the home office professional in your life? Think outside the home office box with these six gift ideas.

All washed up

Think about the last time you thought of a great idea while you were in the shower. Your choices were to write your idea on the wall with shaving cream, wait until you dried off to write it down, or give up and assume you’ll remember your brainstorm later. There’s a better option: Aquanotes. This waterproof pad (you can write under water) attaches to your shower wall and is ready to capture your next idea. Some ideas are all washed up, but yours don’t have to be.

A working desk

You want to work out, but you need to work on a proposal. Why not do both at the same time? The TrekDesk combines a desk with a treadmill. This hard-working desk includes a holder for books or magazines, making it easier to walk and work at the same time. There’s also a stand for your phone, 3 stacking trays, and 2 cup/utility holders. One of the best parts of this 72” x 34” desk is that it folds up for easy storage. With a desk as industrial-looking as this, you’ll need to make a choice between looks and function. When you work for yourself, function usually wins.

A sweet sound

Turn up the volume and let your favorite tunes fill your home office with the Big Blue™ Live Wireless Bluetooth Speaker. This speaker that works with any Smartphone or Bluetooth-enabled device, may be small, but it has a big sound. You can hear it up to 33 feet. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself doing the happy dance. Why not? No one’s watching.

Anger management

Do you ever have one of those days when nothing seems to go right? Instead of punching the wall or kicking the door, slam the Dammit doll anywhere you want. This stuffed doll, with unruly yarn hair, will make you feel better. Best of all, you’ll save money by not having to patch your wall.

No longer out of sight

If you’re a visual person, like me, it’s easier to remember what you need to do when it’s right in front of you. But white boards and chalkboards aren’t the best option when you’re trying to mix function and design. The Sort it out! wall caddy, made with either real bamboo or magnetic stainless steel, is a better alternative. Along with space to write reminders, it has 3 rear compartments for storage, 2 strong magnets, and 3 hooks for keys and bags.

See the light

What do you get for the home office professional who has everything? Break away from buying another mug or picking up a picture frame and consider giving a custom lamp instead…a Lamp-in-Box, to be exact. Not only will your friend, family member, or even favorite client enjoy a one-of-a kind gift designed by you, you’ll be happy knowing no one else bought the same gift. Sort of sheds a new light on originality.

An Open Letter to Kate Spade

Dear Kate,

I’m a huge fan of your must-have purses, clothing and everything else you design. Actually, I own one of your purses (a real one, not a knock-off), but to be honest, I didn’t buy it. My sister bought it last year and decided she wanted something bigger so she gave her beautiful purse to me. I love it, so technically that makes me a loyal customer, right?

Last week while I was at Nordstrom I saw your new iPad sleeve. It’s the one that reads, “Working From Home #playhooky. My working from home radar is always on so I wasn’t surprised I saw it, even though it was on a high shelf.

Here’s the problem… I think I’m missing something. I run two businesses from home but I haven’t figured out how to work from home, play hooky and still make money. [Read more...]

5 Organizing Products Someone Needs to Invent

Guest Post by Dan Brantley

Dan is a professional humorist and speaker, and one of the funniest people I know — aside from the salesperson at Nordstrom who asked if I wanted to try on swimsuits. So when he told me about some organizing products he knew would never be made, I was intrigued.

1. “Always clean & empty” storage shed

This wonderful device is installed in your backyard and filled with all the stuff you want to keep, but don’t really need. At random intervals, a large dump truck comes along and empties your shed. The next time you go outside with Aunt Mabel’s Crock Pot, you’ll be amazed at how much space you have. Additionally the items are sold at local charity thrift stores. It’s recycling at its best! Think Before You Buy More Office Supplies

I’m the first to admit that I’m an office supply addict. If I like a product’s design, color, and even material, it’s hard to resist buying it for my home office. But after donating more supplies than I care to admit, I don’t buy anything unless I know it will serve a specific purpose.

Consider a few things before you shop for more office supplies.

  • Fight the urge to buy one more product. Even if that product is guaranteed to help you get organized, think twice before you buy it and bring it home. Consider whether you already own something similar that you tucked away in a closet years ago. If you don’t look for supplies you thought you bought, but aren’t sure, you’ll find those supplies when you move or decide to overhaul your home office. That’s when you’ll say, “I was looking for that!” and either use it or donate it to a charity that can use it. [Read more...]

Bare Essentials: Add a Touch of Color

File and fold

You may work in your home office day after day, but some days it’s better to mix it up and work somewhere else. When you need to take files with you, the Bungalow file tote can handle the job. It’s sturdy enough to hold plenty of letter-size hanging folders, yet folds up for easy storage. It also works well for storing files in your home office, but something this stylish deserves to be taken out once in a while.

Stick with it

One of the (many) things I don’t miss about my corporate days in a stuffy office is my old, grey desk accessories. I’ve done my best to make sure that my home office doesn’t resemble anything close to my old corporate office. Instead of bland accessories, I have colorful and functional ones. The Poppin tape dispenser definitely fits into that category with its selection of eight colors.

Stick ‘em up

There’s no doubt that a valuable photo or piece of art is worth framing. But when you have inexpensive art that you may change out soon anyway, why bother with frames? The Re-stickable Decal Photo Frame makes framing simple, and hanging even easier. The best part is that you can move the frames from room to room without putting any holes in your walls. Each pack comes with eight frames that stick to your walls or windows and won’t damage walls or paint.

Bare Essentials: File These Under Accessories

A whale of a holder

When you think of cute animals, you may not think of a whale, but when it’s the size of a pencil holder and is a pencil holder, it’s hard not to say, “ahhhh.” This handcrafted holder, made from white pine, beech or redwood, holds pencils and paper in the top and back and can grip something in its mouth, too.

Each Wood Whale is signed, numbered and “packed for migration.”

Fixing the filing blues

There’s nothing exciting about filing, but that doesn’t mean that your file cabinet has to be blah. This powder coated cabinet in a beautiful blue and cool green can brighten any home office. It has one letter-legal file drawer and two storage drawers (dog not included).

Bare Essentials: Three Hot Holders

It’s in the bag

Finding a bag that can double as a home office isn’t easy. Believe me, I’ve been looking for that type of bag for over a year. The allrounder does the job perfectly. It’s large enough to hold a desktop file holder inside, along with supplies and a laptop. It will even fit under the seat in front of you when you fly. The best part is that this bag comes in different, stylish designs that have anything but a stuffy, corporate look.

A case for opening a cold one

Your cell phone case may protect your phone but can it open a bottle or can? The “Be A HeadCase™ case has a built-in, stainless steel bottle/can-tab opener on the back of a hard-shell plastic case. This “why didn’t I think of that” case for your iPhone 4/Verizon iPhone 4 or iPhone 3G/3Gs includes a bottom cover slot that makes it easy to charge your phone without taking it out of the case. It also comes with a free app that plays your favorite song or sound and displays a photo when you open a bottle or can.

Spink before you drink

Maybe I still have my dead computer on my mind, but this cup holder, named the Spink, could have kept my glass right next to my computer instead of letting it go bottoms up on my keyboard. The lever-powered suction cup on the bottom of the Spink will keep your mug, water bottle or glass in one place and more importantly, your computer safe.

5 Things to Look for in a Desk

This Pottery Barn desk makes good use of a corner.

A desk is a desk is a desk, right? Not so fast…and not so much.

My L-shape desk (a desk with a return) is better than any desk I ever used in the corporate world. It has two deep file drawers, extra drawers for supplies and a pullout keyboard drawer that I use to hold paper. It not only looks good, it works well for me too.

Your desk may take up too much room in your home office (the bruises on your thighs from running into it are a sure sign) or it may be so small that when you put a card [Read more...]

Power is Good, Especially in Desks

Caretta workspaceFor years I’ve tested, used, taken apart and otherwise analyzed home office furniture for articles in magazines and on websites.  What I’ve found is that home office furniture that’s stylish, functional and includes solid wood features, all at a reasonable price, is rare.

The Caretta Workspace collection is a beautiful exception. My favorite part of the collection is its cable management system (the ability to organize tangled power cords), which means that finally you can hide those annoying, ugly power cords.

Not only does the collection include solid cherry features, there’s a locked laptop section that’s temperature-controlled (no more overheating), a monitor holder and built-in lighting.  This furniture line is warm and sleek and can be configured several different ways.  That’s especially helpful if you plan to move or you like to change your office around once in awhile.

This is a case of you get what you pay for and in this case, you get a lot for your money.
